A Chubby Bunny and a Chicken Purse

Many of you already know I enjoy weird purses. The weirder the better. One of my favorite purses is my chicken purse. It looks like a big fat chicken. Its made of pleather and has lovely markings on it. It was love at first sight. I was pretty sure that nobody else in Billings would have one of these.

I have noticed that when I carry my chicken it turns heads. That can be a fun thing.  Yet, it does get old when people shriek, “Cathy! Look at that purse. Do you see that purse? Is that a chicken? What do you think it is??!” Then they talk among themselves trying to figure out if it’s a purse, why would I be carrying it, etc. I’m not deaf. I can hear you shriek about it. Ask me and I will bore you with the details. If you don’t say anything to me about it, I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing.

Yesterday while I was at a rummage sale this happened. I was going on my merry way looking at some scrapbook stuff. All of a sudden a woman shrieked and giggled about my purse. She sent a kid into the house to get her mom to look at my purse. They they murmured amongst themselves about the purse. I kept looking at stuff. Finally, the lady they pulled out of the house come over to me and asked me, “Do you like chickens?”  I chuckled and told her not particularly, but I loved the purse.  She wanted to see it up close, so I showed it off to her. Suggested that she touch it, which made her giggle. She told me that she was sure nobody else in town had a purse like that. I agreed and told her that was why I liked it. We talked a bit more about purses and I went on my way.

Later I went to Sam’s Club to pick up some cold medicine for us. Several people stopped me to ask about my purse. That was great. As I was getting ready to leave, I heard another shrieker. “Tom!! OH MY GOD! Do you see her purse?! It’s a chicken? Why do you suppose she is carrying a chicken?!”  Now why on earth would Tom know any of those questions? Why would Tom care? She never said a word to me, just kept shrieking about the purse. *shrug*

I’m the type of person to stop people and tell them how much I like something they are carrying or wearing. Sometimes I think that is the only kind word that was said to them all day. If I see something that catches my eye I will be sure to let folks know. For example, one day I saw this plus size gal wearing the most unusual orange top and orange shoes. I thought they looked great! I made sure to tell her so. She started to tear up a bit and Thanked me. Turns out her morning didn’t start out so well and when I said something she was pretty happy to have a positive note in her morning. It was so simple, but it made her day and mine as well.

My goal is to try to tell at least one person a day something positive.  It could be I like their perfume, their purse, a piece of jewelry, etc. If I notice it, I want them to know that. We all carry or wear things to make ourselves feel better. Its nice when someone takes the time to notice.

It’s a simple thing to do. Try it sometime. Instead of just thinking to yourself that you like something, tell the person who is actually carrying/wearing it. You might be surprised at the reaction you get. It also might be the only kind word they get that day.

Have a great Sunday!

  7. Your kindness is something we should all emulate. Great words of wisdom. Kind words can go a long way, as you well know.

P.S. I am nosy and would ask about chicken purse, even though I really, really, really do NOT like chickens.

  8. Who wouldn't love a chicken purse? Come on, people. I love that you're so unique and try to carry unique purses, Bernie. So many people want the perfect name-brand purse these days that they lose sight of the beauty of having something one of a kind (or at least one in a million)!

  9. Awesome advice at the end…you're right, you could make someone's day by giving them a compliment…I like you Bernie!!

  10. I bet kids love your chicken purse : D And Bernie that sounds just like you to say something nice to someone. Sometimes when I'm having a real bad day and someone says something nice it's almost unnerving – like the sun blinding your eyes – but it is always, always very much appreciated : D

Thanks for the plug for Buzz By Sunday *big smile*

  11. I don't think I've ever seen a purse quite like that one before! (And is it Genuine Pleather?!) Yes, one singe kind compliment can totally make someone's day. I know I feel great when someone comments on my $0.50 thrift store clothes and actually asks me where I got something!

  12. Great post Bernie :) I agree we should be nicer to those in our community. It's so easy to just be wrapped up in our own lives.

  13. I'm like you, if I see something particularly attractive on a person or I like their hair style or what they're wearing, I'll let them know. Like you said, it could make their day!

That purse is frackin' ADORABLE! Of course, it would hang in my dinning room with all the other chicken paraphernalia I have going on in there. I always keep my eye out for "different" purses for you.

  14. Cool purse! You are so right. A simple compliment, really can make someone's day!

  15. Oh that's a great practice Bernie, so sweet of you.

Your chicken purse looks awesome by the way.

  16. I like your blog, Bernie :)

And I love weird purses too!!

  17. I usually say something to at least one person when I am out too. I remember a story like yours, I told an older gal at Best Buy how much I liked her jacket, we ended up talking for a half hour waiting in the Geek Squad line. I found out her husband had passed away earlier in the year and she was having a hard time with no one to talk to. I was THRILLED I could make a difference in her day. Pay if forward folks. :)
