Wordless Wednesday

Just when I think that vintage ads couldn’t shock me…….
I was looking for funny vintage New Year’s ads and was shocked!
Who in the hell would put wall paper covered in DDT in their kids room??!
“Tested and commended by Parents magazine”
“Look kids its Donald Duck wallpaper. It will keep you safe from bugs.”
I can’t imagine hanging that wallpaper couldn’t be harmful.
I hope the kids who had it on their walls weren’t wall lickers.
You should be able to click this a couple of times to make it bigger and read all about it.

  • The copyright on the ad is 1947 — do you know in what publication this ad actually ran, and when?

    • Bernie:

I’m sorry, I don’t. I have seen several copies of this ad on the internet, but nobody posted that information, that I found.

  • Asbestos (prevents fires!) and DDT (no bugs!) are two products that had noble purposes but with unintended consequences. There are probably many more that we don’t know about yet. At least these days we do some testing. I hope it’s enough.

Ugh. It makes me wonder….what is it that we think is safe today that we’ll discover in 20 years is actually extremely harmful??

  • Charlene Pitsch:

When I was a kid (a hundred years ago) there was a head lice scare at my school. All the kids that went there were “dusted” with DDT. I remember going home after school and “showing” my Mom what happened that day. POOF went the powder in my hair and I was Whisked into the car and was at the doctor’s office before I could say achoo! He gave us some shampoo and again I was Whisked home and had my head in the sink before I could say Thanks. I went to school the next day and was promptly kicked out for not having a powdery head. The school wanted my Mom to dust the bed and pillows too!! Needless to say the “lice scare” was unfounded and things returned to normal at school. Too bad the scare caused my girlfriend to lose most of her hair from the DDT. I, by the way, had a nice little vacation because Mom wouldn’t send me back until the DDT came out of everyone’s hair.

  • Oh my goodness. That just does not seem like a good idea at all! And look–ceiling papers too!
