Two White Girls With Shovels

Momma_n

It has been a while since I have been on a Rez run with my friend, Sheri. That changed with an unexpected little jaunt to the reservations on Monday.  I just want to warn you that this is not pretty, it has rare moments of black humor and back to sad again.  The whole day we kept talking about what I should put in my blog and how this is going to be in two parts because it was a very long day. This is also a longer than normal post for me. There is a part two and I'll post that another day. Sheri keeps most of the adult dogs at her home when they come into our rescue. We had two adult dogs that were not doing well nor had been for quite sometime.  On Monday, Sheri announced she was going to Hardin to take in  two adult dogs to be put down. I had a bad feeling about the day and didn't want her to take these dogs to be put down alone. As luck would have it, I called her just as she was pulling out of her driveway. I asked her to come get me so I could go with her.  She told me, "You … [Read more...]

A Golden Day

Many of you know that when we adopted our dog, Katie, we started fostering for Rez Dog Rescue. My friend, Sheri, runs the group and I have wanted to interview her for my t.v. show for a while. Since my little local show for The Museum of Women's History is about interesting women, I begged Sheri to agree to let me interview her. She is smart and funny, but not a big fan of being in the limelight. I reminded her that my show is on the same channel that broadcasts school-board meetings and city council meetings. It's not as if it a national show.  I was thrilled when she said, "yes." Mind you it wasn't enthusiastic or excited. More like "ok, you wore me down, I'll do an interview."  I was just so happy she agreed I didn't really care how she said yes, just that she did. Friday was our day to do the deed. I sent her the questionnaire to fill out and the release form.  She picked me up at work and thrust that those papers at me the minute I got in the car. She was not really excited … [Read more...]

Amputees, Bat Dogs and Biff

The best part of our long night. Flowers from Sandy of Billings Animal Rescue Kare. (Photo by Sheri Lee)

It's been a while since I have posted our adventures on the reservation.  Yesterday was a day to "write home about."  Our plan was simple, have a dog put to sleep, bury her and not get caught, pick up 12 dogs/puppies that had been spayed and neutered that day. Just a simple routine run. Many of our friend's know that nothing is simple and routine when Sheri and I get together.  WARNING: This is a longer than normal post. Sheri and I had to run a dog to the vet to be put down. She had not recovered from a long illness. She was wasting away and couldn't stand. It hurt our hearts to see how far downhill she had gone. Sheri carried her into the vet and laid her on the table and the she was given a shot that would allow her to go to sleep and stop any pain she may have been in. This made the 21st dog that had to be put down and I know it hit Sheri hard. After she passed, Sheri wrapped her up in a blanket and brought her to her vehicle. Then we drove to a peaceful spot where Sheri had … [Read more...]

My First White Elephant

All dolled up and ready to party

My friend, Sheri, invited me to a Christmas Party/White Elephant gift exchange at B.A.R.K. Its a shelter that Rez Dog Rescue works with. They take in puppies and dogs to their shelter to adopt out. They are great in helping out when we have too many puppies. They get them fixed and shots and so on. Let me tell you B.A.R.K. is SPOTLESS! You could eat off the floor in there. The director and volunteers are all amazing folks. I've seen many of the names on Facebook postings but had yet to meet many of them. The party would also have a white elephant gift exchange. I had no idea what that is. You take something tacky or funny and wrap it up and put it under the tree. The first person picks and opens a present. The next person in line can either steal that present or open a new one. Each present can be stolen by other people 3x's. Keep that in mind, its an important part of the story. I put on my finest Christmas headband. I put some glitter eyeliner on as well. Just to be festive. I … [Read more...]
