Two White Girls With Shovels

Momma_n

It has been a while since I have been on a Rez run with my friend, Sheri. That changed with an unexpected little jaunt to the reservations on Monday.  I just want to warn you that this is not pretty, it has rare moments of black humor and back to sad again.  The whole day we kept talking about what I should put in my blog and how this is going to be in two parts because it was a very long day. This is also a longer than normal post for me. There is a part two and I'll post that another day. Sheri keeps most of the adult dogs at her home when they come into our rescue. We had two adult dogs that were not doing well nor had been for quite sometime.  On Monday, Sheri announced she was going to Hardin to take in  two adult dogs to be put down. I had a bad feeling about the day and didn't want her to take these dogs to be put down alone. As luck would have it, I called her just as she was pulling out of her driveway. I asked her to come get me so I could go with her.  She told me, "You … [Read more...]

Some Days Are Better Than Others

Patch loves to snuggle with his Dad every night.

Our dog Patch has his good days and bad days. If you don't know about his Cerebellar Hypoplasia click this link. Some days he is just your typical drunk looking dog. He wobbles and smiles to beat the band. Mr. Bernie and I are to the point that we don't even notice the head bobs, his arch backed when he plays or his Lipizzaner Stallion walk. The fact that he looks like a bobbing bird when he drinks doesn't even phase us anymore. Today was not one of those days. Today was a day when the poor guy can only crawl to get around. When his Dad gets up he has to crawl to get to him. He pants from the effort by the time he gets to where he wants to go. When his Dad scratches his ears he gives a huge smile to show his Dad he loves him. Then he flops down on the ground from the effort. Mr. Bernie and I are used to Patch and don't notice a lot of what other folks do. We were talking this morning about how this morning is one of those days we notice. That our hearts are being tugged on while … [Read more...]

Have You Ever?

ID-100224548

Have you ever had one of those days when everything is making you mad or sad? Your husband is breathing normally and you want to smother him? Even when he doesn't have a cold that makes him sound like Darth Vader. Everyone who comes into your shop gets on your nerves. A simple, "Hi", can make you come unglued. It seems as if everyone is making stupid decisions that are not in their own best interest and they do them anyway.  The beeping of your cell phone that you have a message makes you want to toss your phone across the room. Your husband picks you up a  yummy coffee is too hot or too cold or to something. Suddenly, everything that you have been putting off and not worrying about is a huge issue for you? Talking to anyone seems like too much effort so you don't talk? You eye Dr. adjusts your contacts to something better and that is annoying? Your husband buys you a piece of fudge and even that is too much to eat? Nothing sounds good. Everything sounds good. The dogs are doing … [Read more...]

Amputees, Bat Dogs and Biff

The best part of our long night. Flowers from Sandy of Billings Animal Rescue Kare. (Photo by Sheri Lee)

It's been a while since I have posted our adventures on the reservation.  Yesterday was a day to "write home about."  Our plan was simple, have a dog put to sleep, bury her and not get caught, pick up 12 dogs/puppies that had been spayed and neutered that day. Just a simple routine run. Many of our friend's know that nothing is simple and routine when Sheri and I get together.  WARNING: This is a longer than normal post. Sheri and I had to run a dog to the vet to be put down. She had not recovered from a long illness. She was wasting away and couldn't stand. It hurt our hearts to see how far downhill she had gone. Sheri carried her into the vet and laid her on the table and the she was given a shot that would allow her to go to sleep and stop any pain she may have been in. This made the 21st dog that had to be put down and I know it hit Sheri hard. After she passed, Sheri wrapped her up in a blanket and brought her to her vehicle. Then we drove to a peaceful spot where Sheri had … [Read more...]

My Not So Jolly Holiday Season

Holiday-Blues_GWT_MW_2010_SadSnowman_460x200

My blog is supposed to be a humor blog. My goal is to make people laugh. To be honest, I haven't found much to laugh about lately. It all started a couple of weeks before Thanksgiving, I realized I have not been home for a Thanksgiving since I have moved to Montana. I think its 10 or 11 years. That hit me like a speeding train and took my breath away. I think I cried at LEAST once a day before Thanksgiving. Having my own pity party. Sadly, Mr. Bernie had to attend the pity party as well. He was a good guest, saying the right things.  It can't be pleasant to have your wife burst into tears each morning before work. At Thanksgiving with Mr. Bernie's family, I was not the most perky gal in the world. Before we left, I explained why to his sister, that I'm having the most awful bout of homesickness ever. I even teared up talking to her a bit. We have been struggling with what to do with  our 6 month old puppy, Patch. His shaking puppy syndrome is NOT getting any better. … [Read more...]

Rescue is Not all Puppies and Unicorns Farting Rainbows

Sweet-Pea and her last meal.

This Labor Day was one of  the most exhausting ones that I can remember.  I ran the gambit from laughing, crying mourning, and laughing again.  I've helped a dog rescue group for the past few months. It's the group that we got our Katie from. When we got Katie, all I wanted was a dog. One dog. It turns out I found a whole lot more. For the most part, I just go along for the ride to the reservations and look pretty.  Sheri drives and I prattle on about nothing and everything. She tells me where we are going and what we are going to be doing. I might hold a dog or take a picture. She does the bulk of the work.  Today was going to be a long day. I had no clue how long.   We logged in over 200 miles rescuing dogs.  Dog Rescue was all puppies and happy adoption tales until today.  Today was not the usual Puppies and Unicorns farting rainbows kind of rescue day. Oh, no. It was to be much more than that. One of our stops was to pick up an older dog. We were told that this old dog needed … [Read more...]
